How would you feel if you flew back from your summer holiday or business trip, and then realised you had to exit from your plane and get on a coach in order to reach the terminal building at Bristol Airport?
This might sound like something of a nightmare and you would be right, but it is actually a reality for some of the passengers who use this airport to fly in and out of the UK. It’s not too good at any time, but can you imagine how inconvenient and annoying this could be in bad weather?
That is why Bristol Airport has been working on the ideal solution. An announcement made a few weeks before Christmas 2008 revealed that a brand new walkway is going to be built to eradicate this problem. This means that instead of around half the passengers having to rely on those coaches to get them from plane to terminal, they can all simply use the walkway instead.
The walkway will be fully covered, providing an experience not unlike the one you would come to expect from many other UK airports already. It is understood that there have been some issues about the nature of the walkway previously, which is why it has taken until now to receive the go ahead for the project.
So what are the benefits that will be seen when this walkway - known as the Western Walkway - is finally built and opened for use by the travelling public?
Well, the main and most obvious benefit will be to the passengers. Instead of disembarking from their flight and having to walk across the tarmac to reach a coach, they will be able to move directly into the new walkway. It’s clear to see that this will be a far safer prospect compared to the current situation.
But while the cost of the new walkway will obviously be significant, the cost to the environment will be lessened once it is in place. All the coaches that currently complete that short journey on a daily basis will no longer be needed, leaving Bristol Airport with a much smoother and more enjoyable process when it comes to making sure people can get on and off their flights quickly, easily and enjoyably.
There is no doubt that the passengers who will be affected by this will approve of the plans, although of course it will be some time before the new Western Walkway is built and completed. Incidentally this could be the first of several other improvements to Bristol Airport - there are apparently other ideas in the pipeline which may be put forward in the very near future.
There is no doubt that Bristol Airport is an ever developing place. As more and more people fly out to more and more destinations, there is a real need for the services on offer at the airport to keep up with demand. And it looks as if this new Western Walkway may be just the first step towards filling that need.
